An in-depth talk into the recent archaeological discoveries surrounding Brougham Roman cemetery by Dr Lauren McIntyre (Human Osteologist working at Oxford Archaeology).
Excavated between 2025-2026 as part of the OCA archaeological investigations for the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine road upgrade with National Highways.
This video explains OCA’s role within the A66 upgrades explaining we partake in developer led archaeology, meaning legally archaeological works must be undertaken before ground works for the road scheme can begin. None of what we excavated was able to be left in-situ due to the high likelihood of it being destroyed during later stages of road development.
This talk also delves into the background context of the site with knowledge of previous rescue excavations in the 1960s. The context of the cemetery in Northern Britain during 2nd-3rd centuries AD, and our latest findings.
