Sketch Walk

 Try sketching and learn more about archaeology

 Join sketchbook artist Janet Swailes and archaeologists from Oxford Cotswold Archaeology for a sketch walk near Brough. This half-day session invites you to explore archaeology and local history through the medium of sketching. The session includes a beginners guide to field sketching, combined with discussions about archaeology, history, and more. 

No previous experience is required. All art materials are supplied. 

What you will experience:

👉 Learn how to sketch. Artist Janet Swailes is an experienced sketchbook art tutor and will provide guidance and support in developing your sketching skills.

👉 Discover local stories. Learn what archaeology can reveal about the people who lived and worked in the Eden Valley.

👉 A gentle walk. Walk a 1.2km route along quiet lanes, footpaths, and fields. 

Perfect for anyone wanting to learn more about art and archaeology and meet others with similar interests.

Please note: Under 18s are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by a responsible adult and be able to complete the walk.   

Practical Information:

• Date: Saturday 08 August 2026 

• Duration: 4 hours, but you can stay afterwards for as long as you like! 

• Cost: Free – all art materials supplied 

• Accessibility: The walk is outdoors with uneven ground and footpath stiles. 

• Clothing: Sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothes (Please note on your booking if you do not have sturdy footwear, as we can support you with getting some) 

• Facilities: No refreshments – please bring your own drinks/snacks. The walk ends next to Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour & Tearoom. 

• Weather: Goes ahead in good conditions. In wet or extreme weather, the walk may be rescheduled. 

• Photography: Welcome for personal use. Please avoid photographing other participants without permission. 

• Parking: Yes, free parking is available. We’ll send full directions and parking instructions with your booking confirmation.
